With everything that’s happened in the last year, it’s understandable to want to wash your hands over and over again. However, doing this may actually be what’s causing your hands to dry out and peel. The top layer of our skin is called the epidermis, it’s our key protective layer. Washing your hands frequently with water, soap and sanitisers will disrupt this layer; it rinses away germs and dirt, but it also strips the vital, protective oils in your skin. Over time, this all leads to dry skin, further disruption of the skin barrier and inflammation. This in turn makes your skin vulnerable to irritants, moisture loss and infections.
Now, don’t get me wrong, handwashing is essential these days, but we’re going to give you some tips to help overcome cracked, peeling, and even painful skin on your hands.
1) Use lukewarm water
Use lukewarm water to wash your hands, not hot water. Leaving your skin in hot water for too long may remove the natural ‘good’ oils from your skin and dry it out more.
2) Moisturise immediately after washing hands
Dry, cracked skin makes it easier for bacteria and other germs to get inside your body. Moisturise as soon as possible when you’re done washing your hands. Even better, apply moisturiser while your skin is still damp to help lock in the moisture.
3) Choose products that are free from all synthetic ingredients and fragrances
Your skin is less likely to get irritated and dry if you use products that are formulated with 100% natural and organic ingredients.
